Here’s a hot take for you, trail mix is just chocolate with extra steps. I mean, if you plan on purchasing a bag of “sweet n’ salty” trail mix, at least be honest with yourself. We both know you only bought that bag of mostly cashews for the three yogurt-covered raisins or dark chocolate pieces intermixed in your snack you purchased, convinced that its guilt-free. My other hot take comes on the eve of Halloween. Candy corn, those weird little yellow, orange, and white things, yeah, they’re actually delicious. You walk around, pretending like they’re gross because they look like corn, but guess what? Corn is delicious as well!
Tired of my hot takes? Well, here’s what you missed in the news yesterday.
Dude, Where’s My Plane?
Air traffic controllers had no answer to Lion Air’s questioning on the whereabouts of Lion Air Flight 610. According to recent reports, shortly after taking off from the local airport in Jakarta, Indonesia, the Boeing jet crashed into the Java Sea, carrying 189 people, passengers and crew combined, on board. As of now, no survivors have been found.
Experts are baffled by the events of the crash, given that the plane was flying in good weather during the day, and the plane had hardly any miles flown on it.
“This doesn’t seem like a more normal crash caused by something like weather or an old plane. That’s what makes us worry.”
–Gerry Soejatman, Aviation Expert
Soejatman posits that the pilots received inaccurate gauge readings from sensors affixed to the hull of the aircraft, part of a set of instruments called the pitot-states system. According to the New York Times, this is not the first plane crash where the PS system is suspected of being at fault. In fact, the same aircraft that crashed on Tuesday morning experienced airborne issues while en route to Jakarta from the island of Bali.
Malcolm In The Merkel
Like the wondrous sitcom for which the above pun is based, German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that after 13 seasons of “chancelloring with the stars,” her fourth term will be her last. Merkel will remain in office until the end of her current term in 2021, and she will not run for re-election when the next federal election takes place.
With the European Union (EU) preparing themselves for Brexit, many European political figures are concerned with Germany’s muddied future in terms of leadership.
“The problem is we already see a weakness in the German government that does not bode well for Brexit – there will not be a strong German voice pushing for British interests. It won’t bode well for Italy which needs European help at the moment. So that’s my worry, this reliability of Germany and its government is no longer there to the extent that it was in the past.”
–Marcel Fratzscher, President of German Institute For Economic Research (DIW)
Under The Sea, Under The Sea
Well, it’s official, the lagoon-city of Venice, Italy is suffering its worst flood in the last ten years, and tourists are in shock. I mean, to be fair, you decided to explore a place that is practically submerged in water, but you do you. According to local reports, the “acqua alta” (high water) has reached heights of over five feet.
In response to the severe weather conditions, the Venetian government has suggested that all tourist and residents wear rain boots when walking around the city, and also demanded all water transportation services be suspended until further notice, according to Forbes.
“Residents and visitors were seen wading through waist-high water in St. Mark’s Square before the mayor gave orders to evacuate the area. Police wearing hip waders carried a number of children to safety as stranded tourists waited to be ferried to higher ground.”
