We’ve run into two different issues that stem from the same core problem; we don’t take mental health nearly as serious as we should. Mental health is just as important, if not more important than taking care of one’s physical health. I thoroughly enjoy going to the gym and eating well, but if I feel depressed or something just isn’t right, that has to be handled before anything else.

Our first issue is that we overuse the word “anxiety.” To feel anxious is to experience worry, unease, or nervousness about an event or occurrence that is uncertain.

Everyone feels anxious at some point, but this is very different from being diagnosed as someone who suffers from clinical anxiety. As Dr. Charles Goodstein, a clinical professor of psychiatry at NYU, says, “what makes a disorder is when people have anxiety that mounts to such an intensity that they’re no longer able to cope with it. People with anxiety disorder express very intense feelings of dread or nervousness in the face of events that others may handle without any issue.

I understand if this makes you anxious, but while you take the time you need, here’s what you missed in the news yesterday.

This Election Is Gonna Be Crazy

President Trump announced plans for running for reelection within weeks of his inauguration. While some may call this premature, these individuals largely underestimated our president. According to my sub-par mathematical skills, President Trump has a little under two years left of his time as president, but he has made it quite clear he has no intention of leaving.

The recent onslaught of Democratic candidates demonstrates just how intent Democrats are on reclaiming the throne in 2020. In a recent Monmouth University poll, when asked to choose between “a Democrat you agree with on most issues but would have hard time beating Donald Trump,” or “a Democrat you do not agree with on most issues but would be a stronger candidate against Donald Trump,” Democrats preferred the latter by nearly 60%.

While I have every intention of speaking on the potential democratic candidates for the next primary cycle, it’s abundantly clear that people care less about who will be the next president, so long as it’s not Donald Trump.

Prevent The Shutdown At All Costs

The government has been functioning as usual for the last two weeks, but prior to peace being restored, President Donald Trump said if Congress cannot create a deal that allows for at least some funding of his wall, he will shutdown the government again. Congress has been working, day and night, to prepare a border security deal to prevent another shutdown. According to several reports, Congress is proposing less than $1.37 billion for border barriers which is significantly lower than President Trump’s original ask of $5.6 billion.

President Trump has made it clear that he is less than pleased with Congress’ border deal, but members from both parties are insisting that he take offer, and avoid a shutdown at all costs.

“While the details are being hammered out, the tentative agreement represents a path forward for our country — away from another round of fraught negotiations against a government funding cliff, away from a dreaded government shutdown…”

Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY)
