We could spend the next “insert amount of time here” discussing our societal dependence on technology, and if my memory serves me well, I believe we have, but never mind all of that. One of the most influential industries to come out of the whirring tech industry was created to make our lives easier, and it most certainly has. The world of on-demand delivery services is replete with companies employing different tactics and using state-of-the-art logistical solutions to deliver us the products we love, need, or just want, at break-neck speed.

Companies like San Francisco-based startup DoorDash have emerged as pioneers of the courier arts, delivering croissants across town, or pad see ew to your cold, damp apartment. According to recent reports, DoorDash is raising another $500 million at a valuation of approximately $7 billion, adding to the company’s $1 billion fundraising round led by DST Global and Coatue Management. Though food delivery is not a new concept, investors in DoorDash and other food delivery companies are betting on our technological codependence.

In 2013, Nutrition Journal published a study which showed that in  1965, somewhere between 88% and 95% percent of meals were prepared at home, but forty-two years later, in 2007, the number dropped between 65% and 72%. I can’t tell you how many working-class people I come across that tell me they either go out to dinner every night, or have food delivered. Blame the rat race that forces us to slave over keyboards for sixty hours every week, or blame our laziness; it does not matter. The fact is we are no longer cooking like we used to.

Special Delivery! On-Demand Tech Companies Hit Billion-Dollar Valuations; Here’s How Investors Can Capitalize In The Market

Though the food delivery industry, and its recent technological facelift, represent a method of making life easier that has been around for quite some time, I posit that the original intention of this practice was not to promote laziness and increase dependence, but to assist those with lessened access to food stuffs.

The phrase “food insecurity” relates to the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. The key phrase  in that definition is “reliable access.”

According to the USDA, food deserts are “parts of the country vapid of fresh fruit, vegetables, and other healthful whole foods, usually found in impoverished areas.” While some of us get frazzled when contemplating whether we want poké or pizza for lunch, millions of Americans lose sleep trying to figure out how to feed their families/themselves.

This herein lies the intended purpose of food delivery, and I believe this presents an incredible opportunity for delivery tech companies looking to build a better world for us to live in. One of the nation’s largest Blue Cross Blue Shield companies is currently running a six-month pilot program called foodQ, which operates meal deliveries for people living in food deserts around the country.

“Through the foodQ service, the companies will offer consumers easy access to affordable, nutritious foods to improve their health outcomes, particularly for diet-related, chronic conditions, while reducing avoidable emergency room visits and hospital admissions…”

ParcelPal Technology Inc (PKG) (PT0.F) (PTNYF)is a delivery tech company that is focused on innovating, fabricating, and distributing products/services to improve the quality of life for consumers.

The Company’s executive leadership recognized the systemic inequities that exist for people residing in food deserts, as well as in locations with lessened food access, and created an on-demand marketplace where customers can shop for all the essentials and have them deliverer wherever, whenever.

In recent news, ParcelPal Technology Inc (PKG) (PT0.F) (PTNYF)announced at the tail-end of January that the Company has formed partnership with MADD Canada to aid in the continuous fight to prevent impaired driving. As part of the ParcelPal’s national rollout campaign, advertising for ParcelPal’s service will be seen across the country in various educational forms.

Together, MADD Canada and ParcelPal will launch a national awareness campaign focused on educating Canadians on the dangers of impaired driving and the options they have for getting items they want or need without leaving the party.
